Kanab

Utah

4970 ft
Altitude above sea level: Kanab

Our visits: We have passed through Kanab many times during our southwest trips. So far, we have also slept in Kanab during 4 visits in October 2012, October 2014, April 2022 and June 2023.

Kanab

Description: Like many places in the area, Kanab was founded by Mormon settlers. The first families moved here around 1870. The location near some of the most popular landscapes in Utah, makes Kanab one of the most popular tourist places in the area. As a result, you'll find numerous providers of guided tours through the amazing landscape around Kanab. Until March 2022 the famous Wave Permit lottery took place every morning in Kanab. This led to an increasing development of the infrastructure in terms of hotels and restaurants. So you can find a good selection of hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, etc..

Our rating: We like the small town very much. It offers a good base for exploring the area. Here you can find everything you need as a tourist. In addition, the prices are usually a little more moderate than in Page.

TouRistische Infrasturktur in Kanab

Since the wave permit lottery was moved to Kanab a few years ago, the city has certainly taken an upswing in terms of infrastructure. Since then, numerous new hotels have popped up. But you can also find numerous restaurants and a few stores where you can find a bargain. But it is mainly the nature around the small town, that makes a visit here worthwhile. Since Kanab is only a good hour west of Page and hotel prices in Kanab are often much cheaper, the place is also well suited as a base camp to explore the highlights around.

Hotels

Description: We have stayed at the Best Western Red Hills twice and the Kanab Suites once so far.

Positive: Breakfast included in the room rate (Best Western), clean and spacious rooms (both hotels), fully equipped kitchenette (Kanab Suites).
Negative: There is no such thing for us at either hotel. In comparison of both hotels, the Kanab Suites is newer and more upscale in our opinion.

During our last visit to Kanab in April 2022, we discovered the Kanab Suites Motel and fell in love with it. Not only that it was really affordable for what it offered, but for us everything fell just right. Even though we can recommend both hotels with a clear conscience, we would personally choose Kanab Suites.

A detailed description of the Kanab Suites is also available on our hotel page - Independent Motels.

Restaurants and a coffee

Wild Thyme Cafe

198 South 100 East On Highway 89, across from the Holiday Inn, Kanab, UT 84741
HOMEPAGE

Description:  Not knowing the restaurant from our previous visits to Kanab, we wanted to check it out on our April 2022 visit.

The menu promises fresh food, which sounds American at first look, but then in detail rather does not offer the usual menu.

The restaurant looks friendly and inviting. Besides two indoor dining areas, there is also a larger outdoor area.

4/5

Our rating: We liked the restaurant very much. Not only the nice atmosphere, but the whole experience made for a very pleasant evening.

The food was very good and offered a pleasant change from the usual flavors with the fresh herbs and side dishes. We can definitely recommend a visit here and would also like to eat here again.

Willow Canyon Outdoor

263 S 100 E, Kanab, UT 84741
HOMEPAGE

Our rating:  Willow Canyon Outdoor is not a coffee place in the usual sense, but an outdoor store with a small coffee counter. Since there is very tasty coffee here, however, this is also our place to go when we are in Kanab or drive by. Since the store is also very pretty, we can also highly recommend a stop here.

Update April 2022: There are now a few places in Kanab that offer coffee. However, Willow Canyon Outdoor still has the best coffee by far in our opinion.
