Ward Charchoal Ovens SHP

Description: The six stone ovens for charcoal production were built in 1876. They have a height of 30ft and a diameter of 26ft. The kilns were necessary because high-quality fuel was needed for the nearby silver smelters. The ovens were operated until the end of 1879, because within only 3 years all the trees within a radius of 60mi had been cut down.

The park is reached via an approximately 6mi (coming from Ely) or 10mi (coming from Fallon) unpaved road that turns off Nevada Highway 50. Both roads were in very good condition when we visited in September 2019.

Our rating: We found the small park and the ovens to be quite interesting. However, the amount of wood needed to make the charcoal was shocking. The ovens offer very nice photo motifs. We enjoyed the visit here very much.
