Recapture Pocket

Description of how to get there: Recapture Pocket is located a few miles east of Bluff in southeastern Utah. There are several groups of interesting hoodoos and bizarre rock formations in the area. It can be reached via Highway 162, turning left from Bluff onto a dirt road (Recapture Pocket Rd) after about 5mi. Coordinate: Latitude 37.298339, Longitude -109.465673. Since there are only three more junctions in the sequence, it is better to navigate with a GPS device for orientation. Nevertheless, here are the coordinates of the next three junctions.

After a total of 6mi left - Coordinate: Latitude 37.311344, Longitude -109.461093.
After a total of 6.5mi right -Coordinate: Latitude 37.310224, Longitude -109.468847.
After a total of 7.3mi left - Coordinate: Latitude 37.319280, Longitude -109.471610.

After a total of 7.8mi you reach the parking lot of the second group. Coordinate: Latitude 37.318488, Longitude -109.480430.

Trail length: 1.1mi roundtrip
Altitude difference: approx. 66ft
Time needed: 2 hours
Difficulty level: easy

During our visit, in February 2016, the road conditions of the first 6.2mi were quite good. Here you could also have driven with a passenger car. The following 1.24mi, from the 3 junction, are then very rough and stony. Here is in any case higher ground clearance is needed.

The areas are small and manageable, hiking is not a problem as everything is pretty much flat. There are no paths, you can walk freely everywhere. In the surrounding area there are still several hoodoo groups that you can explore. We limited ourselves to two during our visit.

Our rating: We liked area of Recapture Pocket very much not only because it offers a lot of beautiful photo motifs. With a suitable car you can spend here well half a day.
