Salt River Canyon

Description: For a good view of the Salt River Canyon, take Highway 60 between Globe and Show Low. If you head north from Globe, you will pass several lookouts from which you have a nice view into the canyon. Then the road descends in serpentines. There are numerous opportunities to stop and look. The canyon, often called the little Grand Canyon , belongs to the Salt River Canyon Wilderness. You can basically enter it at any time, though there are no trails or other infrastructure. Most visitors stay on the Salt River. If you want to take a boat, you need a permit beforehand.

Our rating: In October 2011 we drove through the Salt River Canyon and stopped at a few viewpoints. Even though the weather wasn't great, this is quite an impressive canyon and definitely deserves a short stop.
