Great Chamber

Description: Locals have known the place for a long time under the name Cutler Point. In recent years, however, the location has also become increasingly popular among tourists and so the name Great Chamber was created at some point. The Great Chamber is located about 32mi north of Kanab. 8.5mi lead through partly deep sand. The unpaved part of the road starts at Johnson Canyon Rd. Almost immediately the road becomes very sandy. During our visit in April 2022, high clearance and 4-wheel drive were necessary. With a rental car, even with 4×4 it would have been a challenge not to get stuck in the sand. Thus, we also saw only off-road vehicles with proper tires in the entire area. Since we didn't want to take any risks with our rental car, we opted for a guided tour. In Kanab there are several operators who offer tours. We have decided on Coral Cliffs Tours . It took three hours to complete the tour, including arrival and departure.

Once you have made it to the trailhead, the hike is very short, but you still get quite out of breath, because the trail climbs very steeply over a huge sand dune. Nevertheless, this should be possible for everyone.

Trail length: ca. 0.5km
Altitude difference: ca. 80m
Time needed: 3 hours
Difficulty level: easy

Our rating: Since our guide had the great idea to go to the Great Chamber right in the morning, we were the first visitors on the day and had the great fortune to be all alone for almost an hour. Only when we were on our way back other visitors came up the sand dune. Probably this loneliness had its influence, because we enjoyed our time here in this special place very much. Even though getting around is a bit tedious because of the sand everywhere, we can highly recommend a visit here. In addition, we want to advise everyone not to drive here with a rental car.
