Note: On dirt roads, road conditions can change constantly. Therefore, we strongly recommend that everyone check the road conditions before each trip. We do not recommend driving on unpaved roads before, during or shortly after rain or snowfall.

Secret Spire

Description of how to get there: The Secret Spire is located north of Canyonlands NP. From Highway 313, which leads to the national park, turn right onto Dubinky Well Rd just before the park entrance. From here on the road is unpaved. Coordinate: Latitude 38.628905, Longitude -109.801795. Follow this road for 6.5mi and then turn left onto Sekret Spire Safari Rd. Coordinate: Latitude 38.690787, Longitude -109.881968.  Basically, you drive on this road until you reach the trailhead, however, there are two junctions to the left until then. Once after another 3.7mi Coordinate: Latitude 38.691450, Longitude -109.943342 and the second time after another 1mi. Coordinate: Latitude 38.689004, Longitude -109.959873. We are now on slickrock and the driving becomes demanding. Therefore we parked the car after a few hundred yards. Coordinate: Latitude 38.688086, Longitude -109.962060 and walked the rest of the way.

Distance: Starting at the junction from Highway 313, it is a 11.3mi drive to the trailhead.

The entire road is unpaved. During our visit in February 2016, the roads were in very good condition. In parts it was a little sandy. However, a four-wheel drive was not necessary. As always on dirt roads, a little more ground clearance is not a hindrance.

Hike Description: You can hardly call this a hike, especially since in principle you could also drive up to the Spire. The way is easy to find, because we could already see the Spire from our parking lot. There are no paths, you can walk freely everywhere.

Trail length: 1mi roundtrip
Altitude difference:
Time needed: 1 hour
Difficulty level: easy

Our rating: The area is very lonely. The chances to meet someone here are rather low. We also had the Spire to ourselves. We thought the Spire was pretty cool, because you inevitably wonder how that thing got there. It stands completely alone on a rock. Whether the sight is worth the long drive here, everyone must decide for themselves. We liked the Spire very much.
