Stokes Castle

Austin

Description: Driving through Nevada on Highway 50, each house you come across makes you happy. Austin is one of those rare, small towns along the road. Founded in 1862 during the first gold and silver rush, Austin is home to over 300 people. The most famous building is certainly Stokes Castle. The three-story building was built in 1897 by Anson Phelps Stokes and was intended as a summer residence. But the Stokes spent only one summer here. Because after they sold their mine, they left town and never returned. Stokes Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

At the moment it is managed by the Austin Historic Society. The area around the tower is fenced off and you can only get a glimpse of it from the outside.

Our rating: Austin is a nice little western town that offers a little infrastructure on the drive down Highway 50. In places that are located in the middle of nowhere, we always wonder why people want to live there, but obviously several hundred people have found a reason to do so. Certainly not a must see, but a nice place to stretch your feet a bit.
