Jerome

Description: Since ancient times, the land Jerome is located on belonged to the Yavapai. However, when gold was found nearby in 1863, massive fighting and massacres ensued, as they often do, and the Yavapai were driven out of the area. Jerome emerged as a gold mining town and many of the old buildings that cling to the hillside are still standing today. The mines that were created are now protected and form Jerome State Historic Park. The park also includes the Douglas Mansion, the stately home of the greatest mine owner of his time. The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm and costs $7/person admission.

Our rating: The small town is picturesquely nestled on a slope. That alone makes it attractive and invites you to take a walk through the streets. In our opinion, you don't have to travel here especially, but if you're in the area anyway, it's worth a little detour.
