Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak

Description: Pikes Peak is one of the Fourteeners, one of the 53 mountains in Colorado above 13000ft. But it is one of the few whose summit you can reach by car. Since 2011, the road to the top is paved. The mountain is named after Zebulon Pike, who led the first expedition to the mountain in 1820. However, he never reached the summit. A rack-and-pinion railroad also leads to the summit. It is the highest in the world. After years of renovation, it will resume operation in May 2021. Railroad Homepage.

The mountain road is famous for its annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. As of June 2018, the record for the 12.4mi road with 156 curves is 7:57.148. The road to the top requires a fee and is only open at certain times.

Our rating: When do you get to an altitude of over 14000ft so quickly anywhere? It's a great experience to go up here and especially to experience the altitude and its effects on the human body. So if you don't have any problems with your cardiovascular system, you should give this a try. We have been up Pikes Peak twice so far and really really liked it. Sometimes the view is so good that you can see all the way to Denver.
