Stud Horse Point

Description: Stud Horse Point is a nice viewpoint of Lake Powell. In the foreground there are some great hoodoos, so to speak as decoration.
Distance: From the junction on Hwy 89 to Stud Horse Point it is approximately 4.5mi. The alternate approach is approximately 5.7mi long.
Time needed: 2-3 hours.

The most beautiful light is probably about 1 hour before sunset. Not later, because otherwise the sun disappears behind the rim. We visited Stud Horse Point in the late afternoon in October 2012.

The drive in detail: The road to Stud Horse Point is completely unpaved. Basically it is not difficult to drive and not very difficult to find. You just drive up to the cliff in front of you. Since there are some junctions and side roads it is best to use a track. So the risk of getting lost is the lowest. The way we drove had a sandy passage where a four wheel drive was very helpful. Otherwise, a higher ground clearance would have been enough.

We have not yet driven the alternative route ourselves. (Download-A above). The path is a bit longer and probably has no sandy passages.

Our rating: Beautiful location for the sunset. Since Stud Horse Point is relatively close to Page and also easy to get to, you can always come back and try all times of the day. We liked it very much.

3.5/5
Stud Horse Point is located about halfway up the cliff, just below the rim.
