Our visits: So far 1 visit in February 2016

Note: On dirt roads, road conditions can change constantly. Therefore, we strongly recommend that everyone check the road conditions before each trip. We do not recommend driving on unpaved roads before, during or shortly after rain or snowfall.

Alstrom Point

Description: Alstrom Point is located in the area of the Glen Canyon NRA and is one of the very few great viewpoints of Lake Powell. It is not easy to reach, but the way is worth it. We visited Alstrom Point in February 2016.

Distance: The distance from the junction at Hwy 89 to Alstrom Point is about 26mi.

The entire road is not paved and is crossed by several washes where you don't know in advance if they are dry and passable. Before driving on the road, you can ask the Bureau of Land Management in Big Water about the road condition. In our experience, however, it makes more sense to just rely on your gut feeling and check out the conditions by yourself. You can always turn back. As a general rule, however, dirt roads should only be driven on when dry.

Time needed: 3-4 hours, depending on how long you stay at Alstom Point.

Our rating: The view of Lake Powell from Alstrom Point is great. You are mostly alone with yourself and nature. We can definitely recommend a trip here.

The drive in detail: The junction with the Dirt Road to Alstrom Point is located in Big Water directly across from the Bureau of Land Management. Coordinate: Latitude 37.077621, Longitude -111.662346. The trail is signed and quite easy to find. First, follow Smoky Mountain Rd. for about 15mi, then turn onto Croton Rd. Coordinate: Latitude 37.067810, Longitude -111.482073. After another 4mi you reach the junction to Alstom Point. (See sign above). Coordinate: Latitude 37.130639, Longitude -111.414524.

The indication 5mi is a bit misleading, because here you don't reach the actual Alstrom Point, but a viewpoint a bit ahead. Coordinate: Latitude 37.130639, Longitude -111.379981.

To Alstrom Point Coordinate: Latitude 37.059099, Longitude -111.364248, you still have to pass about 2mi over a rocky passage and more or less rumpy slickrock. (Photos left and right). During our visit, the road was in fairly good condition. 4×4 was not necessary, however a high clearance is necessary and especially helpful for the last 7mi. Of course, if you don't want to put your car through the last 2mi, you can walk the trail. No matter which way you take, at the end you will be rewarded with great views of Lake Powell.
