Nine Mile Canyon

Description: Nine Mile Canyon is about 37mi long and runs from Mython in the north to Wellington in the south. The canyon is home to the longest petroglyph art exhibition in the world. So far well over 1000 sites have been found with more than 10000 individual images. The most famous is probably The Great Hunt panel showing a hunting scene. However, in the early 20's a problem arose for the drawings on the walls. There are oil and gas deposits in the area, which were naturally extracted. The truck traffic on the then unpaved road caused a lot of dust that settled on the panels and threatened to destroy them. For this reason, the road through the canyon was subsequently tarred. Unfortunately, this also takes away some of its charm and the relative solitude one had here.

Our rating: We are not necessarily the big petroglyph fans, but if we are somewhere in the area and do not have to drive a long way, we like to look at them. Especially since there are really everywhere at the surrounding rocks. Besides, the canyon itself is also worth seeing. Therefore, Nine Mile Canyon is definitely worth a trip.
