Vasquez Rocks

Description: The unusual rocks that rise steeply from the ground were formed, by seismic activity along the San Andreas Fold. Because of their special appearance, and probably the proximity to Los Angeles, the rocks have very often been the setting for movie and television productions. Several episodes of the series Star Trek, for example, were produced here.

Today, the area serves as a recreational area with several hiking trails. For example, part of the legendary Pacific Crest Trail passes through the park. In 1972, the area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you don't feel like hiking, there are several parking lots where you can drive right up to the rocks.

Our rating: We actually found the short hike from the Visitor Center to the main rock formation quite interesting. Not the most spectacular we've ever seen, but we still had an afternoon of fun here. We wouldn't drive a huge detour for the area, but a short side trip is well worth it.
