Coal Mine Canyon

Description: We visited Coal Mine Canyon in November 2009, in combination with Blue Canyon. Unfortunately, we had limited time and so were unable to explore the entire area. We only hiked along the rim for about an hour and enjoyed the views into the canyon. However, here you can invest quite a bit more time.

Getting there is no problem. From Highway 264 you drive one of the small dirt roads in the direction of the canyon. That's only a few hundred feet, which you can easily hike without a suitable car. We parked our car at the prominent windmill. Coordinate: Latitude 36.011240, Longitude -111.049006.

Our rating: The colorful rocks in the canyon are great and offer a lot of variety. As the name says, coal was discovered here in the area. Fortunately, the mining was not worth it and so this beautiful place was preserved. A side trip is worthwhile and we can recommend the beautiful canyon for a stopover.
