Diamond Creek Road

Description: Diamond Creek Road is one of the few ways to reach the Colorado River inside the Grand Canyon, by car. For this reason, this is also one of the places where you can take boats out of the water of the Colorado. The Colorado is reached by a 30mi (oneway) unpaved road. This road is on the Hualapei Reservation and you need a permit to drive on it. You can get this permit at the Wildlife Game and Fish Department in Peach Springs. If you research the price on the internet, you will find a price of $25/person + tax. When we visited in June 2023, we paid $32.55 for two adults traveling in one car.
In June 2023, the road was in a good condition. However, since it runs along and sometimes through Diamond Creek, it is also regularly washed away after very heavy rains and must then be closed. In dry weather, however, it should usually be passable for SUVs with increased ground clearance. About half way we were stopped by a ranger who checked our permit.

Our rating: We really enjoyed the drive down to the Grand Canyon. When do you ever have the opportunity to drive down the Grand Canyon to the Colorado? The drive is quite entertaining, even though the view doesn't change much for the first 20 miles. We found the last 5 miles most interesting, when the high walls of the canyon become narrower and narrower and you have to cross Diamond Creek, which also carries here a little water. At the Colorado there is a small sandy beach where you even have the opportunity to hold your feet in the river and test the water temperature.
