Dead Horse Point SP

Description: Dead Horse Point SP is located just east of Canyonlands NP, west of Moab. It offers breathtaking views of a spectacular loop of the Colorado River and the cliffs of the neighboring national park. The park's name is based on a 20th century legend. The particular shape and location of the mesa on which the park is located provided an opportunity for cowboys to use the mesa as a natural corral. The only access is provided by The Neck a ridge about 27.5m wide. Otherwise, the mesa drops steeply on all sides to the Colorado River 600m below. The wild mustangs that lived on the plateau were herded in and the Neck was closed with a fence. The best horses were picked, tamed and sold. The others perished on the plateau, in their prison. There are no natural water sources up here, no food and no shade.

Several times, the park has been the setting for major Hollywood productions. For example, scenes for Thelma and Louise (1991) and Mission Impossible (2000) were shot here.

Our rating: We really think the views from this cliff are simply breathtaking. We can recommend everyone to invest the time for this small park. We think it is worth it in every way.
