Sheep Creek Canyon

Description: The Sheep Creek Scenic Backways is a combination of paved and dirt roads that turn off Utah State Route 44 south of Malila. The road leads through impressive geological rock formations into the highlands of the Uinta Mountains. From Flaming Gorge or the nearby town of Manila, plan at least an hour to explore this picturesque scenic route. The alpine vistas of the High Uinta combined with the breathtaking geology of Sheep Creek are very pretty to behold.
The Sheep Creek Geologic Loop is a 10-mile stretch of Forest Service Road 218 that runs right through the center of the Uinta Crest Fault. Along the way, you'll not only see exposed layers of rock rising impressively from the earth, but you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy the wider surroundings at several viewpoints.
In autumn, the colorful trees are another highlight.

Our rating: Unfortunately, the weather was only average during our visit in May 2023. Nevertheless, we loved the drive through the beautiful landscape of Sheep Creek. However, we can imagine that this is much more spectacular in the fall when the trees are colored.
