Our visits: So far 3 visits in November 2009, October 2011 and October 2014

Note: On dirt roads, road conditions can change constantly. Therefore, we strongly recommend that everyone check the road conditions before each trip. We do not recommend driving on unpaved roads before, during or shortly after rain or snowfall.

Moki Dugway

Description: The Moki Dugway is an unpaved section of Highway 261 that climbs 1099ft at a gradient of 11% over 3mi. From the top you have breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the Valley of the Gods. Since 2016 the Moki Dugway is part of the Bears Ears NM. Built in 1950 to transport mineral resources from Cedar Mesa to the plains at Mexican Hat. The road is mostly in very good condition and so can be driven by any passenger car.

Our rating: It's fun to drive down the switchbacks, or even up, and enjoy the great views. Since the road was in very good condition during all three of our visits, it was a very relaxing drive, despite the steep switchbacks. We can recommend everyone to drive by here once on a tour.
