General information about the permits for the Coyote Buttes South
To visit the Coyote Buttes South (CBS) area, you need a permit. This must be purchased prior to the visit. Each day 20 of these permits are issued. Each permit is valid for one person. 10 of these permits/day are issued four months in advance via online lottery. 10 more permits are drawn each morning at approximately 9:30AM (right after the draw for the CBN permits) at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Kanab for the following day. If you are caught in the CBS area without a permit, you will be subject to hefty fines. Ranger of the BLM control the area regularly.
Also because of the somewhat more complicated and difficult approach to the trailhead, it is somewhat easier to get permits here than for Coyote Buttes North. Nevertheless, one should not rely on it. Again, the more flexible you are, the better your chances of getting a permit. Also for the Coyote Buttes South the groups are limited to max. 6 persons.
Note: Even if you plan to go on a guided tour with a commercial tour operator, everyone needs a permit. The permit of the tour guide is bound to a valid permit of the tour participant. This means that if you don't have a permit, you can't join a guided tour. You can't get a permit from the commercial tour operators and they can't get you a permit either.
Online Permits
NEW: Since 01 October 2020 you can find the online lottery at www.recreation.gov. Apart from that, there are very few changes to the previous procedure. To be able to participate in the lottery, you must first register on the page recration.gov and create an account. Everything you need to know about this and about the permits can be found on the page linked above.
Each month you can get 10 permits/day for the Coyote Buttes South (CBS). These are made available on the 1st of each month at 12 noon Kanab time. You can find the free permits in the calendar . Permits are provided 4 months in advance. That means on January 1 at 12 noon Kanab time you can get permits for April of the same year. On February 1 there are the permits for May etc....
Permits are not drawn by lot, but are issued on a first come, first serve basis. Therefore, you should be quick, especially if you have a specific day in mind.
So the permits will be released every 1st exactly at 12 o'clock (Kanab time) in the calendar. The available days are green and under the date is the number of available permits. You click on the desired day and fill out the form and pay for the permits ($5/person). Afterwards you get a confirmation email and a few weeks later the permits are in your mailbox. Here too, the permits are not transferable!
Walk in Permits
Current: Due to the Corona pandemic, the on-site permit lottery will be held until further notice at the Kanab Center, 20 North 100 East in Kanab . This measure has become necessary because of the prevailing distance rules during the pandemic. Also, until further notice, only one member of a hiking group is allowed to participate in the drawing. Each participant must wear a mask and bring his own pen to fill out the form. Otherwise, the procedure is the same as described below.
You have a much better chance to get a permit directly at the BLM in Kanab.

Here, too, 10 permits are issued each day for the following day!!! verlost. Dafür muss man morgens pünktlich zwischen 9.30 Uhr und 10 Uhr vor Ort sein und sich mit Name, Anschrift usw. registrieren. Danach bekommt man eine Nummer, die dann im besten Fall die Glücksnummer wird. Auch hier werden die aus der Verlosung entfernt, die mehrere „Anträge“ ausfüllen, denn auch hier gilt: nur ein „Antrag“ pro Gruppe. Jede Gruppe bekommt eine Nummer.
In the summer months (from March) the lottery takes place daily, also on Saturdays and Sundays. In winter, on Fridays, the permits for Sunday and Monday are also drawn, so there are draws for three days.
Basically, the permit allocation process is the same as for the CBN. The names and the corresponding numbers are read out, the balls are put into the drum. The balls are shuffled and the lucky numbers are drawn. Again, there are only 10 permits. Meaning, if there are only 2 permits left at the end and a group of 4 people are drawn, only 2 people can go!!!!
