Highway 1

The Center - California

Current 2024: Once again, Highway 1 is closed or only passable to a limited extent in various places. In recent years, heavy rainfall has repeatedly caused landslides, which have severely damaged the road. The current conditions can be found on the website of Caltrans.

Our visits: So far 4 visits in August 1992, August 1994, April 1997 and September 2

Golden Gate Bridge

Highway 1

Description: Highway Number 1 is certainly one of the most famous roads in California. It is 656mi long and leads from Garberville in the north to Dana Point in the south of California. It leads to large parts directly along the Pacific Ocean and so you have great views of the rugged coast. If it is still high and rugged in the north, it becomes flatter and flatter towards the south and offers, e.g. in Malibu and Santa Barbara, wonderful sandy beaches.

Our rating: A must see, should you be here in the area. Unfortunately, you are not always lucky to enjoy the coast in the sunshine. Often enough it is cloaked in fog. As you can see from the photos, we have encountered Highway 1 in all kinds of weather. Still, it's always great to return and drive a bit on Highway 1.
