Whaweap Hoodoos

Description: A few years ago you could drive up to the trailhead via Cottonwood Canyon and a few BLM Roads. Unfortunately, it is no longer legal to drive the BLM roads. There are no barriers, but if you get caught on the roads, you get sent back. We don't know if you also have to pay a fine. Since then, the only way to reach the Wahweap Hoodoos is via a 8.7mi hike. The trailhead is north of Big Water at Fish Hachery. From here you hike north in the wash for about 4.35mi until you reach the Whaweap Hoodoos. The trail in the wash is flat and basically not hard to hike. The surface is probably uneven and rocky in some places, but otherwise probably ok. There are three formations, the northernmost of which has the largest collection of hoodoos. The hoodoos are only lit in the morning, so if you want to encounter them with decent photo light, you should hike accordingly early. We were there in November around 11:30 and already had shade on part of the hoodoos.

Trail length: approx. 8.7mi roundtrip
Altitude difference:
Time needed: 5-6 hours
Difficulty level: moderate - The trail leads through a dry wash. The length of the trail and the uneven ground make it strenuous and not pleasant to hike.

Our rating: Beautiful, because unusual, location. There are not very many places in the Southwest with snow-white hoodoos. For this reason, a visit here is already exceptional, however, it is not so spectacular that we took the long, not very spectacular, hike again. We visited the hoodoos in 2009, when it was still possible to drive on the roads.
