Allgemeines zum Ouimet Provincial Park
The Ouimet Canyon, which is around a billion years old and was formed by meltwater towards the end of the last ice age, is around 100 m deep, 150 m wide, and around 2 km long. At the bottom of the canyon, there are plant species that are otherwise only found in the subarctic region of Canada. This is because sunlight only reaches the bottom of the canyon for a very short time. This special feature of the gorge was the decisive reason why it was placed under protection. The canyon was named after Joseph Aldric Ouimet, the former Canadian Minister of Public Works.
