Sault Ste. Marie

Description: Sault Ste. Marie is located on the Saint Marys River, which forms the border with the USA to the south. On the south side of the river lies the American city of the same name, Sault Ste. Marie, in Michigan. The city was divided as a result of the British-American War. Between the two cities lie the Soo Locks. These locks overcome a height difference of over 6 meters and connect Lake Huron with Lake Superior. Among the tourist highlights that we unfortunately could not visit during this trip are the Ematinger Clerque National Historic Site and the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. The full-day train ride to Agawa Canyon is one of the city's main attractions, especially in autumn when the trees change color. The train is regularly booked out during this time and reservations must be made in advance.

Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site

Description: The locks on the Canadian side of the St. Mary River are now only used for smaller boats and tourist purposes. Large container ships all pass through the Soo Locks in the USA. The National Historic Site offers a beautifully landscaped park and lots of information about the region and the importance of the locks.

The murals in Sault Ste. Marie

Description: As an artist, the murals of Sault Ste. Marie were one of the things I was most looking forward to before our vacation. There are so many of them here that there is even a website dedicated to them. Here you can find information about the murals, the artists, and, of course, where to find them in the city.

Our rating: We like this small town. It offers a few interesting activities to pass the time, has good infrastructure for tourists, and, last but not least, is beautifully situated, surrounded by stunning nature. If you continue westward, it is also the last major settlement before Thunder Bay, which is over 700 km away. This makes the town a good place to stop for the night on a road trip.
