Victoria

Description: Victoria was founded in 1843 as a trading post of the Hudson Bay Company. The city was named after Queen Victoria. Today it is the capital of the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Our rating: Victoria is a lovely, beautiful city on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The historic part of the city around the Inner Harbour offers many pretty houses and a beautifully landscaped waterfront that invites you to linger. From here you also have the possibility to go on a whale watching trip to the San Juan Islands. We liked the small town very much and we can definitely recommend a visit.

The Butchart Gardens

Description: The huge private garden is located about 13mi north of the capital Victoria. Here the flower lover will find everything his heart desires. There are several different gardens, numerous greenhouses and everywhere a huge display of flowers.

Our rating: Actually, we are not so much fans of landscaped gardens. We rather like the wild growing plants. However, this garden is really beautifully designed and certainly worth a visit if you are interested in flowers and gardens.

Chemainus

Description: The village was founded in 1858 as a cluster of logging camps. In 1880 the railroad reached the place and led to further growth. The attraction of the village are the 39 murals portraying the history of Chemainus and the surrounding area.

Our rating: We were also attracted to the small town by the many murals, during our visit in July 2002. Those who are interested in murals will certainly get their money's worth here. We liked it very much.
