Things to know about Niagara Falls

Description: Niagara Falls are located exactly on the border between the USA and Canada. They are formed by the Niagara River, which connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario. The falls on the American side consist of the American Falls and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls. They have an edge length of 853ft. The Horseshoe Fall is on the Canadian side and has an edge length of 2133ft. At night, the falls are throttled down to a quarter of their volume for power generation. In the morning, when the tourists slowly crawl out of their beds again, the falls are turned on again and you can admire them in their full glory.

Niagara Falls - Canada

Description: Since it is not too complicated to cross the border into Canada and back into the US, we recommend that everyone explore the Canadian side of Niagara Falls as well. In our opinion, you have a much better view of the falls from Canada. One of the best views is from the Skylon Tower. On the Canadian side, you will also find hundreds of shops, restaurants, and other leisure activities. The entire area around the falls is one huge amusement park and is open at all hours of the day and night.

Admission fees: 18CAD/person (elevator to Skylon Tower)
Opening hours: Daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m.
For the GPS: 5875 Falls Ave, Niagara Falls  Canada (Sheraton on the Falls) – 6700 Fallsview Blvd, Niagara Falls, Canada (Embassy Suites Niagara Falls-Fallsview)

Important for crossing the border!!!
From Canada to the USA: If you are flying from Germany to Canada, you need a valid eTA for Canada. If you are then visiting the USA via a land border, you need a valid ESTA for the USA as well as a so-called I94 form. You can fill this out online the day before or at the border.
From the USA to Canada: If you are flying from Germany to the USA and want to travel to Canada by land, you need a valid ESTA for the USA. In this case, the I94 is created automatically. If you now want to travel to Canada by land, you need NO eTA for Canada.

Our rating: During our two visits to Niagara Falls in October 2010 and 2013, we stayed on the Canadian side of the falls. We then walked across the bridge to the American side and viewed the falls from there as well.
