Wawa

Description: Wawa is one of the small towns along Lake Superior that has quite good infrastructure for tourists. There are numerous places to stay, restaurants, and several attractions in the surrounding area. The town is located north of Lake Superior PP with numerous highlights and east of Michipicoten Post PP with its waterfalls and beaches.

Waterfalls

Our rating: We spent two nights in Wawa and really liked the small town. For us, it was a great stopover on our trip around Lake Superior. We explored the provincial parks in the area starting from here and can definitely recommend Wawa as a place to stay.

White River

Description: The real Winnie the Pooh was a small black bear originally from White River in Ontario. He was named after the Canadian city of Winnipeg in Manitoba. The real Winnie the Pooh was adopted by an English officer in White River and ended up in the zoo in London, England. The bear cub was an attraction at the zoo, where he met his future best friend, Christopher Robin Milne. Christopher's father was a writer, and the rest is history. A.A. Milne went on to publish numerous children's books based on this special connection between Winnie and Christopher. In 1961, Disney acquired the rights to Winnie the Pooh.

Our rating: White River was an opportunity for us to stretch our legs a little on our road trip along Lake Superior. However, there wasn't really much more for us to see here than Winnie the Pooh and the small park around it. But it was still worth a quick stop.

Marathon

Description: Marathon is located just north of Pukaskwa National Park. As there is also significant industrial activity here in the form of a large pulp and paper mill, the town has a small amount of infrastructure. This makes it a good place to stay overnight if you are on a road trip along Lake Superior.

Northern Lights

Our rating: Marathon itself doesn't offer much, but it was the ideal place for us to spend the night on our road trip. The national park, the beautiful Pebble Beach at sunset, and, last but not least, the northern lights that we were able to observe made Marathon a very worthwhile stop for us.

Terrace Bay

Description: Apart from a small lighthouse, there isn't really much for tourists to see in Terrace Bay. The sights are located around the town. The main attraction is definitely the Aguasabon Falls, which are located a few kilometers west of the town.

Breweries

Our rating: Terrace Bay is also worth a quick stop. You can climb the pretty lighthouse and enjoy the view, and stretch your legs a little on the beach.

Schreiber

Description: The Schreiber Discovery Centre & Railway Museum focuses on the history of Schreiber as one of the oldest railway communities on the north shore of Lake Superior. The museum was built to resemble a historic train station and houses numerous documents and treasures from the Canadian Pacific Railway. Schreiber was founded in 1880. Originally named Isbester's Landing, the town was later renamed after Sir Colllingwood Schreiber.

Admission fees: Free of charge, donations are welcome.
Opening hours: 1.Juni bis 1.Oktober täglich 10-17 Uhr

Our rating: The small museum in Schreiber was a really pleasant surprise for us. As we were the only visitors, the very friendly gentleman at the ticket office gave us a private tour. The exhibitions were very interesting. We particularly enjoyed the film that was shown in one of the restored wagons. The museum is definitely worth a visit.

Rossport

Description: Rossport itself consists of just a few houses and is located somewhat off the Trans-Canada Highway. The surrounding nature is of interest to tourists.

Our rating: We stopped here because of the Coastal Trail and the red chairs, right on Lake Superior. We walked from the rest area to the chairs and enjoyed the beautiful rocky coastline of Lake Superior. The beautifully landscaped trail is definitely worth a quick stop.

Rated 3.5 out of 5

Nipigon

Description: In Nipigon, the two arms of the Trans-Canada Highway meet again and cross the Nipigon River together via the Nipigon Bridge. There is not much going on here in terms of tourism. There are a few interesting murals and the Nipigon Lookout, which offers a beautiful view of the Nipigon Bridge and the surrounding colorful forests.

Our rating: The short stop wasn't particularly spectacular, but it was nice to stretch our legs a little.
