Cottage in Lake of Bays, Ontario
Description: We rented the cottage because we wanted to experience living alone in Canada's wild nature. While Lake of Bays is not truly isolated, it is sufficiently remote from larger towns to provide a genuine sense of solitude. We booked the house through Airbnb. It had three bedrooms (upstairs) and was actually oversized for two people, but what can we complain about? There was a huge living room with an open dining room and kitchen. Adjacent to this was a sunroom equipped with a screen. This allows you to sit outside even in summer, when there are likely to be quite a few mosquitoes here. On the ground floor, there was also a great veranda and a utility room with a washing machine, dryer, and an additional guest bathroom. The outdoor area also had a fire pit with plenty of seating. The location was great because, although the house is in the middle of the forest, it is very close to Huntsville and the provincial parks in the area.
Our rating: This house was simply wonderful. Everything was modern, clean, and very well maintained. We felt very welcome. The house was decorated for fall and we were greeted with a bottle of red wine. The kitchen was fully equipped and there was even coffee waiting for us. It was just a great stay and we can definitely imagine renting a cottage again and spending a longer period of time in one place. An ideal opportunity to slow down a little on vacation.

Funky Frog Cottage, Twillingate, Newfoundland
Description: We booked the cottage through Airbnb almost 10 months before our visit. If you want to have as many accommodation options as possible in Newfoundland during the short season, booking early is almost a must. For one thing, there’s a limited number of accommodations, especially in the small coastal towns, and for another, prices are correspondingly high due to the short season. The Funky Frog Cottage is one of four small cottages that are all part of the Whispering Wind Cove Cottages. They’re all located right on a cove a few miles south of Twillingate. Our cottage had one bedroom, one bathroom, and a large open space that served as both a kitchen and a living room. But the biggest plus—aside from the good value for the price—was the location and the amazing view right out onto the ocean.
Our rating: Basically, everything was great here. Everything was very clean, and it had everything we needed for a nice stay. Since the weather wasn't great, we unfortunately couldn't use the patio or the grill. Otherwise, the furnishings were functional and served their purpose. We would definitely stay here again.

Blue Whale Oceanfront Cottage, Elliston, Neufundland
Description: We also booked the cottage in Ellistin through Airbnb nearly 10 months before our visit. The cottage is beautifully situated right on Splars Cove, offering a fantastic view of the ocean. Inside, there are two bedrooms, a large kitchen with a dining area, a living room, and a tiny bathroom. Everything was very clean and well-maintained. The kitchen was fully equipped.
Our rating: Except for the really small bathroom, where you could barely turn around, the house was great. It had everything we needed for a nice stay, so we would definitely stay here again.
