Norris Geyser Basin

Description: Three faults intersect in the Norris Geyser Basin. Water circulates through the resulting fissures and heats up. Thus, here in Norris Geyser Basin there is the hottest pool in the park. Another feature of the basins and pools is the acidic water found here. This allows different algae and bacteria to grow and the water is of different colors than in the rest of the park.
You can explore Norris Geyser Basin via several planked trails. It leads down a hill, which you have to climb up again at the end. The trails are well maintained and easy to hike.
The Norris Geyser Basin is also home to Steamboat Geyser, the largest active geyser in Yellowstone NP. If you want to explore all areas of the basin, you should plan several hours.

Our rating: The basin is huge and great. You should not miss this one during a visit to Yellowstone. We liked it very much, especially because of the beautiful colors.
