Ames Brothers Memorial

Description: The monument was designed by Henry Hobson Richaridson in honor of the brothers Oakes and Oliver Ames. The brothers made their mark in the construction and financing of the transcontinental railroad. The Memorial thus also contains a portrait of the two brothers created by Augustus Saint-Graudens.

The monument stands at the highest point of the transcontinental railroad at 8248ft. Since its construction, the rails have been moved twice to the south, which led to the adjacent town of Sherman becoming a ghost town.

Our rating: The way to the monument leads over a very good dirt road. In dry conditions it can be driven on with any car. The monument is certainly not a must see, but if you are in the area, it is well worth a detour. With a little luck, you get to see a few animals along the way.
