Big Cypress National Preserve

Description: The Cypress National Preserve is a protected area north of the Everglades National Park. Since much of it is a swamp area, there is very little infrastructure in the park.  With the combination of Birten Rd, Upper Wagonwheel Rd and Turner River Rd. you have the possibility to drive into the area and explore it. You drive on a loop along canals, where numerous animals live. The entire route is unpaved.

Our rating: During our visit in March 1997 the roads were well passable with a passenger car. Moreover, we were lucky, as we could observe lots of animals. There were birds in all sizes, turtles and also alligators to admire. We enjoyed the trip very much, because there are not so many opportunities to observe wild animals in their natural environment. Besides the animals, we also liked the landscape very much.
