Waco Mammoth NM

Description: The national monument protects the site of more than 20 prairie mammoths. The bones were found by Paul Barron and Eddie Bufkin while searching for arrowheads and fossils along the Bosque River in 1978. Between 1978 and 1990, a total of 16 complete mammoths were found. These are now in another museum. Here in Waco, another 8 mammoths and various fossils were discovered by 1997. An exhibition hall was built over this second site to preserve the bones and fossils. This hall can only be visited on a guided ranger tour. Tickets for the tours are available at the Visitor Center.

Our rating: We liked the National Monument very much. In addition, we learned many things worth knowing through the ranger guided tour. If you are interested in fossils and prehistoric history, you will surely have fun here.

Dr. Pepper Museum

Description: Dr. Pepper is considered to be the oldest lemonade concentrate to be produced industrially in the USA. Sales of the beverage began here in Waco in 1885. The museum honoring the refreshing beverage opened here in Waco in 1991. It offers a lot of exhibits about the invention and production of the drink.

Our rating: As Dr. Pepper fans (OK, actually only I really like Dr. Pepper), this was a must see. It was quite interesting to walk through the exhibition halls. However, I found it totally disappointing that there was no tasting station where you could try all the drinks produced by the corporation. That was one of the highlights of our visit to Coca Cola in Atlanta.
