Connecticut State Capitol

Description: As the state capital, Hartford is home to the State Capitol. This is the seat of Connecticut's government. The building was completed in 1878 and cost $2.5 billion. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1970. The Capitol is picturesquely located in Bushnell Park and can be visited during business hours.

Our rating: We paid a visit to the Connecticut Capitol in October 2013. Unfortunately, we were there on a Sunday and so we could not see the inside of the building. But the exterior and the Capitol itself are nice to look at and offer some nice photo opportunities. The big advantage of the weekend was also that all parking spaces around the Capitol were free. From our experience, it is often very difficult to get parking spaces near the seats of governments during business hours.

Mark Twain House

Description: The house was commissioned by Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) in 1874. He and his family lived here until 1891. Due to bad investments, the author of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn was forced to leave his property. He finally sold it in 1903. In 1929 it was to be demolished but a foundation saved it from destruction, renovated it and made it available to the public for tours. It has been a registered National Historic Landmark since 1962.

Our rating: During our visit in October 2013, we unfortunately did not have time to visit the house from the inside. But also from the outside the house offers a pretty sight. The complex also includes a large garden and several very nice houses from the same time. Even if there is no time for a detailed tour, we think it is worth a short stop to stretch your legs.
