Spearfish Canyon

South Dakota

Our visits: So far 1 visit in June 2017

Roughlock Falls

Description: Rocklock Falls is located in a small branch of Spearfish Canyon. The Little Spearfish Creek which falls down in several steps is one of the most photographed spots in the area.

The parking lot and trailhead to the falls is reached via an almost 1.3mi dirt road. This branches off from Highway 14 Alt and is well signed.

The small park around the falls is home to several hiking trails and is open all year round. The entrance is free. However, there is a small restriction, because in the winter months the dirt road can be impassable.

Our rating: From the parking lot you can hike to the bottom of the small creek and also the waterfalls. The path is a few hundred meters long and descends. We enjoyed stretching our legs a bit here. The cascades of the falls are, at least during our visit in spring, very nice to look at. They offer nice photo opportunities.

These are not the most spectacular waterfalls we have ever seen, but still a nice stop.

Bridal Veil Fall

Description: Another waterfall along Spearfish Canyon is Bridal Veil Fall. It is located about 5mi south of the small town of Spearfish, just off Highway 14 Alt. You can easily leave your car in the parking lot directly across from the waterfall. The waterfall can be admired from a large viewing platform. But you can also climb a little closer.

Our rating: Since visiting the small waterfall does not require any effort, you can definitely make a short stop here. We found it quite pretty to look at. We visited Spearfish Canyon in June 2017.
