Sandford Lab Homestake

Description: Discovered in 1876 by two brothers, the Homestake Gold Mine was one of the largest and richest in North America. At the Sandford Lab Homestake Visitor Center you can learn all about the mining history of the area. There is also a visitor's terrace from which you can take a look into the huge mine crater. Various programs and tours are offered.

Our rating: We stopped by the Visitor Center in June 2017. The view into the deep mine hole alone justified a short stop for us, but the attached information center is also very interesting. You can learn a lot of interesting facts about this huge gold mine. To see everything, you can easily plan one to two hours of time here.
