Houghton

Description: Houghton is the largest town on the Keweenaw Penisula and offers tourists everything they need in terms of infrastructure. There is a pretty historic town center with many stores, restaurants and breweries that invite you to linger. The town is a good starting point for exploring the surrounding area.

Our rating: Houghton was a pretty, very pleasant little town. There was nothing to complain about, except perhaps the extremely high hotel prices. Otherwise, we felt very comfortable here.

Quincy Mine

Description: The Quincy Mine is a large complex of copper mines in Hancock, north of Houghton. The mine was owned by the Quincy Mining Company and was in operation between 1846 and 1945. Today, both the mines and the former smelter are open to visitors.

Admission fees: From $20/person, depending on the tour selected
Opening hours: Seasonal opening hours vary. The mine is open between April and October.

Our rating: Unfortunately, we didn't have time for a tour of the mines during our visit to Houghton. So we were only able to view the huge site from the outside. Here you can find a few interesting objects from the time when copper was the main mineral mined here.
