Frühstück im Hotel/Motel

General information about the motel breakfast

Many hotels/motels now offer a continental breakfast. We are referring mainly to chain hotels here, as independent motels often offer no breakfast or only a very basic one. Although there are differences between hotel chains, breakfast is usually very similar. Generally speaking, more expensive hotels/motels tend to offer a slightly more varied selection. However, there are usually no major differences within the chains. Cheaper chains such as Motel 6 do not offer breakfast. What they all have in common is the mountains of waste they generate. Real plates and silverware are the absolute exception. Jam, butter, cream cheese, milk, etc. are always individually packaged in tiny plastic containers. Sometimes individual slices of toast are also wrapped separately in foil. Even though this is not meant to be a moral lecture, it really does bother a Central European who is used to avoiding plastic packaging as much as possible.

Continental Breakfast

Description: Toast, bagels, sweet pastries, sweet cereal, jam, butter, a few cold drinks, milk, and coffee are always available. Chains such as Best Western, Hilton, Choice, and Holiday Inn usually also offer hot dishes such as bacon, sausages, eggs in various forms, and potatoes. There is usually a “meat” and an egg option that alternate each day. Yogurt, oatmeal, waffles, and pancakes are also often available. If you have Diamond status at Hilton, for example, you can enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast of your choice at Hilton Garden Inn hotels. Sometimes there is also fruit, usually bananas or apples.

Our rating: First of all, before giving our rating, we would like to say that we are not big breakfast eaters at home either, so we don't want to come across as too critical here. Basically, the breakfast on offer is fine for filling your stomach in the morning. However, the selection looks and sounds much better than it actually is. Even though it is sometimes quite okay, unfortunately it is often not to our liking. This is mainly because a lot of it isn't fresh and is reheated in the microwave from some kind of packaging. Often, it looks like sausage or omelet, but you don't really know what you're eating. The taste is definitely not a highlight. After a few days, we usually limit ourselves to toast with jam. We'll just draw a veil over the coffee. It's drinkable.
