Things to know about traveling to Canada

Entering Canada as a tourist

eTA

For German citizens, the entry to Canada through the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is quite simple. In addition to an approved eTA application, you also need a valid German passport and a valid return ticket.

The eTA application can be made at the following link. eTA application. The forms can also be displayed in German, to be sure that you understand and fill in everything correctly. The fee for the application is 7CAD. It can be payed either by credit card or Paypal. Approval can be immediate, but it can also take a few hours or days. So don't get impatient if it takes a little while.

However, an approved application does not guarantee that you will actually be allowed to enter Canada. The decision is made by the immigration officer on site at the respective airport of entry. eTA is only valid for tourists and for a maximum stay of 6 months at a time. The eTa application is valid for 5 years and you can enter Canada as often as you like during this time.

If you enter the country by land, you do not need an eTA!!!

APIS

The abbreviation stands for Advance Passenger Information System. This allows additional relevant passenger data to be collected by the authorities prior to flight departure. APIS data can be submitted in various ways:
- When booking a flight
- When booking a flight with the airline via an online form.
- Filling out a paper form e.g. at the check-in at the airport

Immigration and customs

The fastest and easiest way to go through immigration is with the ArriveCAN app or via the website at ArriveCAN. Essentially, this allows you to complete your customs declaration digitally in advance, meaning you no longer have to wait in line. Once you've done that, you don't need the app or a cell phone at the airport, as all the information is linked to your passport and already stored in the system. You can also check for express lines, as you can now use these and don't have to wait in the normal, long queues.

Procedure when using ArriveCAN: Find the express lane and get in line, go to an available machine and follow the instructions, print out the receipt and show it to the officer. Usually, that's all you need to do and you can proceed to the baggage carousel. Sometimes you have to go to another immigration officer and answer a few questions.
Additional information: ArriveCAN can be completed up to 72 hours before travel. Up to 8 family members who share the same address can be registered, meaning that not everyone needs the app. Every traveler must submit a customs declaration, regardless of whether they have anything to declare or not.

If you don't use ArriveCAN, simply join the normal queues, fill out the customs declaration at a machine, then proceed to an immigration officer and on to the baggage carousel.

If you have a connecting flight, you again have to check in your luggage right after customs. Most of the time you also have to go through security again. Afterward you can head on to your new gate to continue your flight. For such a connecting flight in Canada we would recommend to plan at least 2 hours time.

Time zones

In Canada, too, the time is changed from winter to summer time.

In 2026, clocks will change to Daylight Saving Time on March 8 and to Standard Time on October 25.

Public Holidays in Canada

Of course, Canada also has some holidays and just like everywhere else, these holidays are the days of the year when, especially in tourist hotspots, it is very busy. Therefore, we can only recommend everyone to avoid these days and the weekends before or to make timely arrangements such as hotel bookings. Here you can read everything important about the holidays.

Phone and Internet on the Road

Sure, you wouldn't need a SIM card in Canada, but these days we're so used to our mobile devices that we wouldn't want to be without them. The biggest advantage for us was being able to navigate using our smartphones. With the SIM card, we could use this feature all the time. This saved us the additional cost of an extra navigation device. That alone paid for the cost of the SIM card. Another nice feature is that you can use WhatsApp with your German number. Even if you get your own Canadian number, you can set WhatsApp to keep your German number. On long car trips, I had fun chatting with friends at home and sharing current photos.

Experience with a physical SIM card from Holafly with unlimited data. The whole process was professional and super easy. Unlike the funtravel card we had in the USA, there were a few minor problems with this one. For one thing, the network coverage wasn't always very good. Even in larger towns, such as Mont Laurier, we had no network coverage, although according to the provider's map, we should have had. In addition, the assigned Canadian number was apparently assigned multiple times, because during the three weeks of our stay, we received numerous calls and messages from people we didn't know. Nevertheless, we were satisfied with the card overall. The big advantage was the unlimited data volume, which allowed us to make good use of services such as Instagram.

Experience with an eSIM card from PhoneBox. The process was also professional and very simple. Everything worked very well from the start. The network coverage was very good and the price of CAD 35 for 75 GB was unmatched. We can recommend the card without reservation. We didn't even come close to using up the 75 GB available, even though we used the data for several devices at the same time.

Canada Discovery Pass

The Canada Discovery Pass provides access to over 100 locations in Canada managed by Parks Canada. You pay a one-time fee of 151.25 CAD and can then use the pass for one year (to the day!!!). This means that if you buy the pass on September 30, for example, you can use it until September 29 of the following year. We highly recommend getting a pass if you plan to visit several national parks on your trip. The pass is valid for 7 people in one car. If you are traveling alone, you pay 75.25 CAD for one adult.

You can also find everything about the different entrance fees and passes here..

Current 2026: In 2026, admission will again be free for all visitors from June 19 to September 7 to all areas managed by Parks Canada, e.g., national parks. Everything you need to know about this can also be found at here.
