Waimea Canyon

Kauai - Hawaii

...a short remark in advance...

As already mentioned on the overview pages, we visited the Hawaiian Islands in 2000. At the time these pages are created (February 2020), our visit will be almost 20 years ago. Although we have fond memories of our three weeks on the islands, all of our assessments are based on 20-year-old memories. Even though the locations we describe here still exist, the circumstances have certainly changed. We ask you to keep this in mind. All opening hours and entrance fees are as of February 2020.

Waimea Canyon SP

Description: Over millions of years the Waimea Canyon was carved up to 2953ft into the depth by the Waimea River. Even though its 9.9mi length does not come close to its big brother on the mainland, it ist called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific .

Our rating: Waimea Canyon is huge and we had fun driving along the lookouts and taking a peek into the depths. Especially great was all the green between the canyon walls. We can only recommend anyone who visits Kauai to stop by here.

NaPali - Kona Forest

Description: Unfortunately, the name of the trail we hiked at Waimea Canyon is missing from our records. All we could reconstruct is that it went west towards the coast in Kona Forest. We hiked about 1.2mi. Almost the whole way was through dense vegetation. At our turnaround point, we could catch a distant glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. The trail was a well maintained hiking trail and was very easy to hike.

Our rating: We enjoyed the hike very much. Especially the lush vegetation and the many fragrant flowers around us remained in our memory.
