Nachdem die W\u00e4lder in den Jahren 1880-1910 stark ausgebeutet worden waren, versuchten F\u00f6rderer, den Sumpf zu entw\u00e4ssern, um Ackerland zu gewinnen. Die Entw\u00e4sserung schlug fehl und hinterlie\u00df ein Feuchtgebiet, das von Kan\u00e4len, Gr\u00e4ben und Entw\u00e4sserungsteichen durchzogen war. Diese CCC-Teiche und Drainagen werden noch immer von den Feuchtgebietsmanagern genutzt, die das heutige National Wildlife Refuge betreuen.
